IFS Therapy: working with the parts of you
IFS Therapy in the Sutherland Shire
IFS therapy based in Caringbah and the Sutherland Shire, and online across Sydney and Australia.
What IFS actually is
IFS stands for Internal Family Systems. The idea behind it is that your mind isn't one single thing. It's made up of different parts, and you already know this even if you've never called it that. There's the part that drives you hard and the part that wants to stop. The part that gets defensive before you've had time to think. The voice that's never satisfied with you. The part that reaches for a drink, or the phone, or distance, when something gets too close.
No single part is the whole of who you are, and none of them is bad. Each one took on a role, usually a long time ago, to protect you from something that hurt. They're still running those roles now, even when they cost you more than they help.
IFS is the work of getting to know those parts instead of fighting them. As they start to trust they don't have to carry the whole load on their own, they ease off. When what they have been protecting can finally be met, that is where the healing happens.
There is also a part of you that none of this ever damaged. IFS calls it the Self. It is the calm, curious, compassionate, clear part of you, confident, courageous, creative, connected, even when everything else is at war. You do not build it or earn it. It is already there, it just gets crowded out by the parts working too hard. The work is helping you come back to it, and lead from there instead of from the parts stuck doing old jobs. Less war inside. Less run by patterns you didn't choose.
What the work looks like
We go slow. We pay attention to what's actually happening inside, not just the story on the surface. We don't try to get rid of the anxiety, the anger, or the part that shuts down. We get to know what it's protecting. That's what makes the change hold instead of snapping back.
Who it's for
Men and women, individually. Trauma and complex trauma, anxiety, addiction, burnout, grief, and relationship or family patterns that keep repeating. You don't need a diagnosis or to have it worked out before you come.
